Zola's Journey Of Phone Back Film Screen

Key Sentence:

  • STARS TAYLOR PAIGE AND RILEY KEOUGH WORK THE PART TO TURN THE ELECTRIC STORY OF KING A’ZIAH ‘ZOLA. ‘

On the fateful weekend of 2015, King embarks on a life-changing journey into a short trip from Detroit to Tampa, Florida, to make extra cash turned into a spiral of visits from foreign men, pimps, undressing, and consequences.

This Wednesday (June 30), the iconic #ZolaStory will hit the big screen as Zola, a film from nearly six years ago. While King himself admits that parts of the original story were peppered on Twitter, he says screenwriter and director Janica Bravo caught on to the tale King wanted to tell.

“Every tweet was there,” King told MTV News of the film, which was co-written by Jeremy O. Harris of Bravo and Slave Play. “Yaniska and I grew closer throughout the process. There was a scene that didn’t appear in the tweet. So I’d assume it’s nearly 110 percent accurate.”

Before King decided to share the tweet, King discussed uncovering the dirty details of a trip that had been confusing for months. But “about six months later,” he flipped through his phone and found a photo of himself and Jessica, the dressing room where he had gone on a hike. The images brought back painful memories, so he decided to spill all his tea.

But the part of the story presented in the film that wasn’t the topic of the original tweet takes place in a hotel room after screen partner Jessica Stephanie (Riley Kew) leaves the group and meets a group of guys. King said Bravo made the scene “so beautiful,” with better lighting in a cleaner home environment, but in real life, King said that part of the trip was “very traumatic.”
